ReFashion Cortland - Sustainable Design Fashion Show
Join the Cultural Council at it's first ever ReFashion Cortland sustainable design fashion show. Comprised of entries from our community, this event highlights the creativity of our neighbors.
ReFashion Cortland challenges individuals to develop their own creations in the categories of upcycling and redesign. This may range from clothing and accessories made from found items like water bottles or plastic bags and wrappers to re-designed items that are given a second life through the designer’s modifications to a piece.

Workshops
To gear up for this show, the CCCC collaborated with local organizations, including Magpie Custom Creations and the SUNY Cortland Fashion Club to offer workshops on redesigning clothing. These workshops took place January 26th, February 23, March 16, and April 5 at the Magpie Custom Creations in the Cortland Corset Building located at 75 E. Court St. Each Upcycling Workshop showed participants how to deconstruct and reconstruct cast-off clothing from the closet, thrift store, or hand-me-downs. Hand and machine sewing techniques were demonstrated, as well as other unique ways to piece together new garments out of old favorites.

Why ReFashion?
Fashion is an artform that permeates our everyday lives. From the clothes we wear to the clothes we see in the media, we are constantly being exposed to fashion choices. Yet with the appearance of fast fashion and the swiftly changing trends, the clothing and textile industry has a significant impact on our world beyond the aesthetic. To raise awareness about this impact, the Cultural Council of Cortland County (CCCC) will challenge our community to rethink sustainable style through a Cortland ReFashion show in April that merges environmental sustainability with fashion.

ReFashion Cortland will engage individuals to develop their own creations in the categories of upcycling and redesign. This may range from clothing and accessories made from found items like water bottles or plastic bags and wrappers to re-designed items that are given a second life through the designer’s modifications to a piece. The initiative will culminate with a fashion show where models showcase the entries on the runway. A panel of local judges will review the entries and select winners in each category.
This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.
